| In Akan Culture (as is in many indigenous African
Societies) there are numerous holidays or days set aside for
festivals. These festivals vary according to purpose, time of the
year and tradition. We here at Adade Kofi Bosomfie Sankofa observe
the most often celebrated custom of Akwasidae around which the Akan
calendar is structured. Celebration is done every sixth Sunday.
Throughout the Akan world people gather on thee days to celebrate
their ancestors and guardian forces that help them in various ways.
Interestingly enough, the Wiccan Calendar also celebrates eight
Sabbaths that fall approximately every six weeks as well. These
Sabbaths are designated as four major and four minor. Ancient
cultures have much in common especially when they are allowed to
co-exist peacefully.
Interwoven in the fiber of Akan celebration are other
festivals such as Sacred Days, Odwira, Durbar, four major Rites of
Passage, Enstoolments, Planting and Harvesting, to name a
few.
In addition to these festivals, we at AKBS also observe
the changing of the seasons with four annual rituals of the
equinoxes and the solstices. Our Akan family here in America is
quite active as well and have various programs and festivals in
their respective cities. We will list these events as they occur.
Stay tuned. |
